What Is Profile Grinding?
Profile grinding is a high-precision CNC grinding process used to create complex, contoured, or irregular shapes on a workpiece. We can use a grinding wheel as a cutting tool to machine your profile in much the same way a lathe uses rotational force and a stationary cutting tool to shape a workpiece. As the piece rotates, the cutting tool is pressed against it, allowing for precise material removal. The difference with profile grinding is that the precision of the grinding wheel can hold more accurate forms and can apply the cutting tool to heat treated, carburized, and coated workpieces. The profile grinding process keeps your component cool and machines difficult parts with precision and accuracy.
We can also dress your profile into a wheel dedicated to your workpiece. This involves using a specialized grinding wheel shaped to your desired geometry. Industries such as automotive, aerospace, turbomachinery, and machine tool manufacturing rely on profile grinding for producing critical components.
When your design engineer would like to iterate through slight variations in the profile on your compressor wheel to maximize air flow or alter the harmonic frequency, we can easily make changes to our dressing program and dress the requested changes onto our grinding wheel. We can then grind the profile on your test components within hours, providing your engineering department with minimal costs to achieve their research goals.
